Monthly Meetings:

Regular general meetings with a speaker will take place on the 4th Thursday of the month.  Whilst the current Covid restrictions are in place the meetings will be on Zoom. Additional talks will also be arranged during the winter months. Talks will cover a wide range of topics of broad general and local interest. The list of speakers and topics is shown below. There's something for everyone there!

Thursday April 22nd 2021 The Work of Marie Curie - Riona Houghton

Marie Curie is the UK’s largest charitable funder of palliative and end of life care and research. They provide support to people with a terminal illness, either in their own homes or in one of their nine hospices in the UK. Coronavirus has impacted their research, with changes to grants and events, but they continue to work assiduously to influence government policy, to ensure people’s voices are heard, and to offer the best possible care options.

Riona Houghton works as the community fundraiser, currently covering Wiltshire and is looking forward to telling us more about the charity.

Thursday May 13th 2021 A programme of songs and their accompanying stories - Steve and Carol Robson

Fool’s Gold are an acoustic music duo who perform regularly for U3As all over the UK. Their shows are live and musical, but with a big difference!
All songs have a story behind them - histories, mysteries, tragedies and romances hide behind even very well-known songs.
Carol and Steve tell these stories, supported by great visuals, and perform the songs live. Audience participation (even on zoom) is almost mandatory!

Thursday May 27th 2021 From wildlife photography to saving the cheetah! - Alison Mees

Our speaker on this occasion will be Alison Mees who has spent many years photographing, learning about and protecting cheetahs in different African states. From an early age, Alison had a passion for wildlife and photography and a desire to work in Africa. Her dream began to come to fruition 16 years ago when she went to work in Zambia and then the Serengeti in Tanzania. She had the good fortune to spend time with researchers from the Serengeti Cheetah Project and develop her knowledge of individual cheetahs and their behaviour. Alison also had the joy of photographing them.

Until the pandemic brought her back to the UK, Alison then spent over 3 years working in Kenya, observing cheetah and supporting conservation researchers with data and photographs.  Additionally, she worked with the local Masai Community on education and health related projects. Since April 2020 Alison has been working as a volunteer for Cheetah Conservation Fund UK. This promises to be another fascinating talk in our Zoom programme!

Thursday June 10th 2021 Climate Change and Planet Earth - David Head
There is growing awareness of the state of our planet and the impact of global shifts in climate patterns. In David’s presentation he will explain how the Arctic & Antarctic are the engines that determine and drive the weather of planet earth. We will hear about the difference between Weather & Climate and how our climate has been, and continues to be, adversely affected by mankind. David will be incorporating some short video clips to compare global warming and climate change and the types of activities that contribute to both. Finally, he will look at some of the ways and means to try to reverse  the situation.
Thursday June 24th 2021 Fields of Battle - Lands of Peace - Mike Shiel
After studying Geography at Oxford, Mike began his life as a photo-journalist by covering 'the Troubles' in Northern Ireland. Here he became associated with the New York picture agency, Black Star and over thirty years later he is still in the fortunate position of being paid to do what he loves - taking photographs.
Mike has visited over 60 countries around the world, working for a wide range of clients such as ABC-TV, BBC, Anti-Slavery International, British Red Cross, European Commission, National Geographic, New York Times, Shell, Time & Time Life.
Over a period of eight years, Mike captured photographic images that combine his passion for history and landscape, and represent a unique reflection on the transformation of the battlefields of the Great War into the landscape of modern Europe. Stories of hope and thankfulness to those who fought in WW1 are the central theme of Mike’s talk.
