National U3A - Opportunities:
A number of opportunities are available to U3A Members arranged by the National Office. Please go to the National U3A web site for the latest offers.

Monthly Meetings:
Regular general meetings with a speaker will take place on the 4th Thursday of the month, with coffee and chat at 10:00 am and the meeting starting at 10:30 am. Talks will cover a wide range of topics of broad general and local interest. The list of speakers and topics is shown below. There's something for everyone there!
Thursday 28th March - Sustainable Fashion - What does the Fashion Industry Curently Look Like? - Jenny Garcia
How have things changed since the movement towards sustainability became “Fashionable”? What does that mean for our wardrobes?
Jenny has worked in the fashion industry for 26yrs. As former Head of Buying at Topshop she is now a sustainability advocate, a personal and commercial stylist, owner and founder of The Curatory, a vintage preloved clothing business.
Thursday 25th April - 100 Piers - Painting at the Water's Edge - Paul,Tracey
Back in 2018 Paul started a project to make paintings of all the piers in the south of England. The project grew to include most UK piers then a few in Europe, which were often influenced by British design. Finally he added some from the US, whose development mirrored that of the UK structures. The project expanded into collections of old litho prints, postcards,and newspaper reports from when the piers were first built. After 5 yrs, all this is now published as a large format book 100 Piers, Painting at the Water’s Edge.
Thursday 23rd May - Introducing the Amazon Honey Bee - Richard Rickett
Do you know how many eyes a bee has? (not two). Which part of their body is used to taste? (not the tongue!)
Beekeeper and author, Richard Rickitt, gives a fascinating and entertaining talk on bees and beekeeping. You will be finding out the extraordinary lifestyle of honey bees, how they live,breed, and most importantly – make their honey!
The talk will be of interest to those who garden, or are curious to know more of bees and bee keeping or simply enjoy a bit of honey on their porridge!
Richard is the co-editor of BeeCraft, the UK’s beekeeping magazine, in print since 1919. The magazine was recently awarded Gold at the Worldwide Beekeeping Congress in Chile, best from over 50 entrants.
Thursday 27th June - From corporate suits to mountain boots: Everest, the 7 summits and beyond - Jo Bradshaw
Jo, a former No saying, height hating, comfort loving Business Advisor, turned her very safe corporate existence into a fulfilling, adventurous life outdoors by donning her Brave Pants a little more often. With a lot of encouragement from great friends she went from jumping out of a perfectly good plane for charity in 2003 to standing on top of Everest in 2016 via an earthquake on the mountain the year before. This is not the whole story. You will be taken around the world to visit 6 of the 7 summits of the highest mountains of 7 continents. The 7th is proving elusive!

Thursday 26th September - SS Great Britain: from launch to re-launch. The history of SS Great Britain
Ian was born and raised on Merseyside spending many an hour watching the arrivals and departures at Liverpool’s busy Pier Head in the 1950’s and 60’s. Ian’s enthusiasm for his subject is clearly evidenced in his illustrated talk. This tells the ship's remarkable story, from her original design through the different phases of her working life. It describes life on board and her incredible salvage and return to
Bristol in 1970, her restoration, preservation, and re-launch as a multi award winning museum of international renown.
Ian has delivered his talk at the National Maritime Museum as well as Probus, Rotary, Inner wheel, WI, National Trust, Arts societies as well as U3a groups. Ian has been a Visitor Experience volunteer and tour guide with the SS Great Britain Trust since 2007.
